Keivn Durant to Warriors: Updated 2017 NBA Championship Odds

The rumors have been floating since last season that we might someday see Kevin Durant make his way to the Golden State Warriors. The rumors of his relationship with Russell Westbrook have always been there and there has been some very open flirting between Durant and the Warriors for months.

When Oklahoma City hired Billy Donovan, they did so hoping that he would be able to lead them to a championship and also so that he could convince Kevin Durant to stay. They played much tougher this season than they have over the past couple of seasons and even had a 3-1 series lead on the Golden State Warriors at one point. Then they went down and with them, the rumors started again.

But Kevin Durant couldn’t possibly go to a team that won 73 games, dominated everyone and then won the championship, right? That would look terrible. He’d be called a ring chaser and everything else you can think of. Plus, how could the Warriors tear apart a team that just won 73 games, dominated everyone and won the championship? Even if it meant adding one of the best players in the league, it still seemed crazy

Then something crazy happened: the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the Finals. They weren’t one of the greatest teams of all-time anymore. They were just a great regular season team that lost in the Finals and that opened a door. Once that door opened…

Kevin Durant signed with the Warriors.

It wasn’t a rumor anymore or a possibility. It was real. Kevin Durant, one of the five best players in the NBA, would be going to Golden State to play with another of the best five players in the NBA. He’d join Draymond Green, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson to form one of the scariest foursomes in league history.

After losing the Finals, the Warriors opened up at -200 to win the 2017 NBA Championship. Then they signed Kevin Durant. Now it’s Golden State -115. That’s how big this move is. The Warriors coming back to win went from a possibility to inevitability, just like that.

The defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers +350 will probably have something to say about that come new season, but that is a long ways a way. For today, it looks like it’s going to be yet another rematch of the Cavaliers and Warriors in the Finals with the regular season being just another long delay until we get that match-up again.

According to the odds, the only team that could possibly stand in the Warriors way is the San Antonio Spurs +800, but that is a big if.
