2018 NBA Rookie of the Year Betting Odds

With the NBA season right around the corner we thought it would be a good time to take a look at the NBA Rookie of the Year odds. This year’s race is expected to be one of the best in years and the odds of a second rounder like Malcolm Brogdon winning this year is extremely unlikely. This class is absolutely stacked.

The favorites here are Lonzo Ball +275 and Ben Simmons +280. These are two guys who will have the ball in their hands a lot on bad teams. Ball should be the better bet here as Simmons will not be the top option on his team unless something happens to Joel Embiid. He’s also likely to split the vote with teammate Markelle Fultz who is +1000.

From what we saw in Summer League, where Ball won MVP after averaging 16.3 points and a league-leading 9.3 assists to go with 7.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals. That’s hard not to get excited about. Of course, that was against Summer League opponents and not the best players in the world.

Dennis Smith Jr at +370 might be the best bet on the board. He’ll get heavy playing time with the Mavericks this season and his peers voted him as the most likely to win the award. That means that they’ve played against him and they think there is something there. He had a great Summer League, averaging 17.8 points per game. To be fair, that poll among players doesn’t have the best history of predicting winners as it hasn’t been correct since Kevin Durant in 2007.

Perhaps the best sleeper pick is Malik Monk +2800. He was the best scorer of the class in college and he’s going to a team that needs some help with scoring. Kemba Walker is the only other player on that team that is likely to be taking shots so that means a lot of scoring opportunities for Monk. Plus, you have the added bonus of him having a huge chip on his shoulder as he fell down the draft order and was taken a few spots behind where he probably should’ve been.

His former teammate De’Aaron Fox should also be getting some votes at +1200. The problem with him is that George Hill will be the starting point guard and he will be fighting for minutes. Of course, once the season is lost (which should be early) Fox will get more and more playing time. That could work out in his favor and give him a shot in this race.

I don’t love Jayson Tatum +1125. He should get minutes, but he’s going to a playoff team that should be one of the top two teams in the East. Shots will be hard to come by with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward on the court and you have to score to win this award.
