2017-2018 NBA MVP Betting Odds

Last season’s MVP race was dominated by two players: Russell Westbrook and James Harden. This season, thanks to offseason acquisitions that saw their teams add superstar players (Chris Paul to the Rockets, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to the Thunder) that seems unlikely to repeat itself. Not that these players are any less great, but their numbers are bound to take some sort of hit in their new surroundings. Even if their team records improve.

That is much of what we see in this year’s preseason odds for MVP as well. Westbrook is the 4th favorite while Harden is the sixth. This year’s race could see some different names. Familiar names, but different ones.

The favorite in this one is LeBron James. The loss of Kyrie Irving could cause him to take on a bigger load during the regular season and carry more of the scoring burden. The assists and rebounding numbers are already there, the talent is already there. He just needs some flashy numbers and a great regular season. I wouldn’t bet on Lebron here because I just don’t think he values the regular season that much, but I’m not sure it would surprise me if he won.

A lot of people argued that Kawhi Leonard should’ve been MVP last season. He did nearly as much as Harden or Westbrook, but did it with world beating defense. He also had an arguably weaker supporting cast and had the second best record in the league. I’m not sure how much further up Kawhi’s numbers could go playing in San Antonio, but he is a threat here.

My favorite play has to be Giannis Antetokounmpo at +1000. He has gotten better and better every year in this league and he’s finally starting to see a bit of a supporting cast. He’s been working on his shot this offseason (like all offseasons) and if he can add a three to his game, he might be the most unstoppable player in the league. The East is wide open for the Bucks to grab a top-three seed and this could be Giannis’ year.

Of course, there is also the case of Kyrie Irving at +1700. I’m honestly shocked his price is this low. He’ll have revenge on his mind, he’ll have the best coach he’s ever played for and play in an offense designed for him to be great. We often forget how young Kyrie is, but he has a lot of room to go and this could be a huge season for him.

The obvious answer is probably Kevin Durant. He had a real argument last season before he went down with an injury. He plays for the best team and is their best player. I don’t really worry about Stephen Curry stealing votes from him in this one because he’s simply better and everyone knows it. Steph is awesome, but Durant is an all-time great.

The only other player I’m really giving consideration to is Anthony Davis at +2200. He has teased us so often that it’s hard to consider, but he really has the talent to do this if he can stay healthy. The West will be tough, but if this Davis/DeMarcus Cousins thing somehow works and they are a top-5 seed in the West? I could see it. He would be the reason and he should be rewarded.

Finally, since everyone loves a shot in the dark pick; how about Kevin Love at +30000? He’ll be taking a bigger role in the offense, he’ll be on a top-2 team in the East and he’s playing with a point guard in Isaiah Thomas who he has a friendly history with. Let’s say he puts up his last Minnesota stat line, 26/12/4 on a top seed in the East. Is that enough?
