NBA All-Star Saturday Betting Odds: Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest, Slam Dunk

While the NBA All-Star game is the centerpiece of the weekend, NBA All-Star Saturday night is the star of the show. Even in past years when we’ve had dunk contests that let us down or skills contest that just went on too long, this is still the most fun night of the weekend. This is the night when all the stars come out to watch and cheer on their teammates or other young players in the league. This is just a fun night of basketball related activity.

There are three events this year headlined, as always, by the Slam Dunk contest. Last year’s winner Zach Lavine won’t be competing this year and last year’s runner-up Aaron Gordon will try to win the crown for the first time. Gordon put on some absolutely insane dunks last year and probably should’ve won so it’ll be exciting to see what he has in store this year. We also have the 3-point contest and the Skills Challenge. The Skills Challenge will once again be “big versus small”. Last year, a big actually won this thing so it’s not quite as ridiculous as it sounds. Let’s take a look at the full odds and each event.

NBA Taco Bell Skills Challenge

Isaiah Thomas wins skill challenge +225
Field wins skill challenge -255
John Wall wins skill challenge +300
Field wins skill challenge -350
Devin Booker wins skill challenge +525
Field wins skill challenge -700
Gordon Hayward wins skill challenge +950
Field wins skill challenge -1350
Kristaps Porzingis wins skill challenge +1050
Field wins skill challenge -1500
Anthony Davis wins skill challenge +1100
Field wins skill challenge -1600
Nikola Jokic wins skill challenge +1300
Field wins skill challenge -1900
DeMarcus Cousins wins skill challenge +1500
Field wins skill challenge -2300

This event is all about speed and precision. The fastest time advances, but you also have to make your shots (or passes) in order to move on to the next part of the course. Last season we saw Karl-Anthony Towns win this event, but it’s hard to see a big like that winning again. Everyone is crazy about Jokic right now and Cousins has really developed an all-around game, but there is no way either of them is winning a footrace against John Wall or Isaiah Thomas.

The best play here is probably John Wall who is probably the fastest man in the NBA right now. A great story would be him against his former Kentucky teammate DeMarcus Cousins in the Finals, but the odds have him as the least likely winner. Strange considering how good his three point shooting has been this year.

NBA Foot Locker Three-Point Contest

Klay Thompson wins Three-Point contest +165
Field wins Three-Point contest -185
Kyrie Irving wins Three-Point contest +475
Field wins Three-Point contest -600
C.J. McCollum wins Three-Point contest +700
Field wins Three-Point contest -1000
Eric Gordon wins Three-Point contest +750
Field wins Three-Point contest -1050
Kyle Lowry wins Three-Point contest +950
Field wins Three-Point contest -1350
Nick Young wins Three-Point contest +1000
Field wins Three-Point contest -1400
Wes Matthews wins Three-Point contest +1250
Field wins Three-Point contest -1850
Kemba Walker wins Three-Point contest +1350
Field wins Three-Point contest -2000

This is always a fun event when a guy gets hot and nobody gets hot quite like Klay Thompson. Last season he got hot and defeated his teammate Stephen Curry in this event and it’s hard to see a single player on this list that can challenge him here. The odds like Kyrie Irving, but I just don’t see that. Eric Gordon is an interesting play, but I’d feel a lot better about him if it were James Harden feeding him open passes instead of a rack. I think the king stays the king here and Klay Thompson grabs it.

Verizon Slam Dunk Contest

Aaron Gordon wins Slam Dunk contest -147
Field wins Slam Dunk contest +127
Derrick Jones Jr wins Slam Dunk contest +180
Field wins Slam Dunk contest -210
DeAndre Jordan wins Slam Dunk contest +1600
Field wins Slam Dunk contest -2500
Glenn Robinson III wins Slam Dunk contest +2100
Field wins Slam Dunk contest -3200

Aaron Gordon is going to do a dunk in this event that will absolutely blow your mind. I know deep in my heart that is true. Will he win? It looks pretty likely. DeAndre Jordan does not belong in this event and when I think of athleticism I don’t really think “Glenn Robinson III”. The wild card here is Derrick Jones Jr. I don’t know who he is, I’ve never seen him play and I had to look up what team he plays for (Phoenix), but he is rumored to be an amazing dunker and based on the odds the bookmakers seem to agree. He could be the Gary Harris of last year or he could be Aaron Gordon last year. I can’t wait to find out.
