This should be a pretty interesting season for the Orlando Magic and I could see them surprising some teams. They finished with just 25 wins last season, but I think that number is misleading. Injuries played a major factor last season and if we assume health in 2019, this team could finish with a much better record than the projection.

Throw in Evan Fournier also playing only 57 games, Nikola Vucevic 57, Jonathon Simmons 69 games and their top draft pick Jonathan Isaac only managing 27 games; and there is a lot of upside for this team just on health alone.

The player that really interests me here is Jonathan Isaac who might be better than any player from this year’s draft and was highly ranked in last year’s before falling to the Magic. He had an awesome summer league and he looks like the perfect player for the modern NBA. I could see him getting some run as an uber-athletic center and that would be devastating for most teams. He’s a big key to what I like about them this season.
This team should be very strong on defense as well. They hired Steve Clifford to coach this team and he usually gets a lot of out his squad on the defensive end. With so many young, athletic players I think he’ll be able to shape them up prety quickly. Isaac and Gordon are strong on that end. Top draft pick Mohamed Bamba is expected to help on that end as well, but I could imagine the Magic taking it slow with him as well. (Even though other rookies see big things from him.)
The one area that this team worries me is with the point guard. D.J. Augustin and Jerian Grant are solid role players, but not exactly going to carry you in big games. That will probably cost them at points during the season, but for our purposes I’m not sure it matters. We’re not picking this team to win the total, we’re just picking them to win a few more games than they did last year.
With that criteria, I am feeling pretty strong about this over. A healthy team with closer to full seasons from Gordon, Isaac and Fournier would make a huge difference and you can’t underrate the addition of Steve Clifford. This team seems to be out of the cellar and moving towards something positive. They are still a year or two away from the playoffs, but I’m looking for around 34 wins this season. FiveThirtyEight sees 33, I’ll take it.
