The Golden State Warriors are the best team in the NBA and I’m not sure it’s all that close. They won the championship in each of the last two seasons and this could be the third time they do so. They are one of the best teams to ever play together in this league and a win this year could cement their status as the best ever. This team won 58 games last year when it felt like they never really cared. This year’s win total is set at 63.5 wins.
There’s been a lot of talk about the signing of DeMarcus Cousins and how it’s a sign of the apocalypse or some other gaga. I’m not buying it. Cousins is great, but he’s coming off an injury that will keep him out most of the season and who knows how he’ll be able to come back. The history of big men with his injury is not pretty and I’m not sure that he is even needed for this team to repeat.
That’s because they have Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson and Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. They are a super team with or without Cousins. The best lineup is with those five people on the court and with the game on the line they will go with those five players with even a healthy Cousins on the bench. These are just facts.
Stephen Curry is on record saying that he still has “another level” with his shooting. What would that even look like? 50% from three? That is terrifying. Him and Kevin Durant could battle for the 2019 MVP this season. This team is so unfair, it’s amazing.
The bench is a question, sure. Andre Iguodala essentially took the regular season off last year and Livingston is a year older. They’ll rely on them plus Jonas Jerebko, Quinn Cook and Kevon Looney to log most of the bench minutes. Nothing spectacular, but it doesn’t really matter when you’ll have one of Curry and Durant on the court at all times.
The center position will be held down by Damian Jones and Jordan Bell until Cousins is back. Who cares? It’s like 20 minutes per game.
The question here is the win total though, not the championship. This is a big number. Last season they fell short of this number, but there were a lot of things that contributed to that. They played two preseason games in China that really messed with their rest for the first couple of weeks of the season. Then they dealt with a Kevin Durant injury, then they dealt with a Stephen Curry injury. The two combined to miss 45 games last season and this team still won 58 games. That is amazing.
I really believe that they could beat this number again. A full season of Durant and Curry is something we are yet to see. Durant missed 20 games in 2016-17 and they still won 67 games. Take away that injury luck and the China trip and they’d have been over last year too. I’m taking the over here and the Warriors to once again win it all. Let’s get them this three-peat then blow this thing up already.
