In a somewhat surprising move, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach Tyronn Lue after his team started 0-6 in the season. This is somewhat surprising as Lue has been to the last three Eastern Conference Finals and led this team to the NBA championship in 2016. It definitely feels as if Lue was fired because LeBron James is now a Laker.

In a year when everyone is shooting threes the Cavs were dead last in three-point attempts. They have a 118.3 Defensive Rating in six games, which is bottom two in the NBA. It’s a small sample size, but this team has not been competing and a change of coach could signal big changes for this team.
Lue was the first coach fired this year and it caught me as a surprise. Betting odds had him at +1200 for the first NBA coach to be leave their post and I totally missed this one.
Tyronn Lue +1200: I don’t think the Cavs would fire their NBA championship winning coach, but if things don’t improve here I could see him leaving the team to preserve his reputation. That said, I still think this team has 8th seed potential and as long as things don’t go too far south I see him sticking it out.
To be fair, they weren’t 0-6 when I wrote that and it felt like they were playing close games.
Both Lue and assistant Damon Jones were let go, two people seen as keys to the LeBron-era and Larry Drew will take over. Drew has coaching experience, but his last run was not pretty. A 15-67 season as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013-14. He definitely doesn’t feel like a “win now” coach. That said, it’s unclear if he’ll finish the season as head coach.
Larry Drew is willing to bridge the immediate coaching transition with Cavaliers, but so far is reluctant to commit to rest of season without an agreement of some kind that extends beyond 2018-19, league sources tell ESPN. Those talks are ongoing with Cleveland.

The question going forward for the Cavs is: are they now open for business? This is a weird roster to try and win now, but there are definitely pieces that can help teams out there.
Kevin Love to the Thunder is already a rumor out there and makes a lot of sense for that OKC offense. George Hill, Kyle Korver, and J.R. Smith could definitely help a contender. Korver re-joining LeBron in Los Angeles makes a lot of sense. JR Smith re-joining LeBron in Los Angeles would be hilarious so I want that to happen as well.
The future of the Cavaliers is Sexton, Larry Nance Jr., and Cedi Osman. The move for this team, with Drew as coach, is to just go with them. Get what you can for the old guys from the LeBron era, start the rebuild and build up the young guys.
