The favorites are the favorites for the reason in these series as both the Bucks and Warriors are huge favorites. Those are the consensus picks to make it to the NBA Finals and they are priced as such. Teams with rockier roads to the Finals naturally have tougher odds along the way.

The Nuggets look like a very vulnerable second seed while the Blazers draw one of the toughest match-ups in all of the playoffs. We also see the top-three in the East as huge favorites. Let’s take a look at all the odds and I’ll share a few of my favorite picks.

Note: The odds below are from 888sport who were the first sportsbook to put them up. Odds may vary at your preferred sportsbook.

#1 Milwaukee Bucks -10000 vs. #8 Detroit Pistons +1700

The Pistons really fell backwards into this playoff spot and I’m not sure they would’ve gotten here without their extremely friendly end of the season. Their last two games were against the Grizzlies and Knicks, and they needed to come back from 22 in the fourth quarter to beat the Grizzlies who were starting no one you’ve heard of. There is no way this team upsets the Bucks.

Milwaukee as a 4-0 sweep is -134 and I see that as the best play here. Even with all of Milwaukee’s injury issues, they still have Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, and Brook Lopez healthy. The Pistons just don’t have what it takes to keep up.

#2 Toronto Raptors -5000 vs. #7 Orlando Magic +1400

Similar thought here, although I could maybe see Orlando stealing a game as these two teams split the season series 2-2. Plus, we all know about Toronto’s penchant for losing early round games against teams they should beat. It’s a different squad this year, but it’s also a more fractured squad with the Kawhi Leonard part never fully meshing with the Kyle Lowry part.

#3 Philadelphia 76ers -2500 vs. #6 Brooklyn Nets +1100

This could be the best series of the first round, at least in the Eastern Conference. The season series was tied 2-2 with two of the games being decided by three or less and the other two seeing each team blow the other out.

The Sixers lineup of J.J. Redick, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris, and Jimmy Butler is crazy dangerous, but it also hasn’t played a ton together. The Nets are just a solid team and I could see them maybe pushing this to six games.

#4 Boston Celtics -560 vs. #5 Indiana Pacers +400

What can I say about the series? If Victor Oladipo was healthy I would probably pick the Pacers here and I still might. The Pacers ranked fourth in Defensive Rating this season and I think they can give the Celtics offense some trouble here. The problem will be scoring and the Celtics will shoot a lot more threes than them.

Kyrie Irving is the best player in this series and it’s hard to imagine the Celtics not winning. I just think they are going to have a harder time than they want to.

#1 Golden State Warriors -10000 vs. #8 Los Angeles Clippers +2000

The Warriors have dominated the Clippers over the past couple of seasons and it’s hard to see this one being anymore than a gentleman’s sweep. Doc Rivers has done magic with this team and I’m really excited to see what happens with them this summer, but they have no chance against this team. Sorry.

#2 Denver Nuggets -286 vs. #7 San Antonio Spurs +220

This line was a real shocker. The bottom of the West has been hoping to get matched up with the Nuggets as most people see them as vulnerable. I’m not sure I fully agree with that notion, but this is definitely a tough match-up for the Nuggets.

Nikola Jokic will be bullied and he’s shown over the past few weeks that he bristles under a more aggressive play style. The Spurs definitely have the players that can do that. This series might come down to him versus LaMarcus Aldridge.

I am interested to see how DeMar DeRozan does here. He’s been a terrible playoff performer in his time with Toronto and if the Spurs are to have a chance of pulling the upset, he needs to show up big. I like his match-up against the inexperienced Gary Harris and Will Barton, but I need to see it to believe it.

The Spurs are a nice underdog play here, but I have my reservations. I do think the Nuggets home court advantage will be lessened here with teams having more time to adjust to the elements and less travel days.

#3 Portland Trail Blazers +115 vs. #6 Oklahoma City Thunder -143

I couldn’t imagine a worse first round match-up for Portland than this. They lost the season series 4-0 to the Thunder and Paul George is finally getting healthy of late.

Even bigger is the fact that the Blazers lost Jusuf Nurkic earlier this season and Zach Collins has not looked good defensively in his playing time. Steven Adams is a really underrated player and I can see him just dominating the boards and the interior in this series.

I really wanted to back the Blazers here, but I just can’t in good conscience. The Thunder had the third best Defensive Rating in the league while the Blazers had the fourth best Offensive Rating. I’ll almost always take defense over offense in a series like this.

Despite finishing 6th, the Thunder are set up pretty well to make the Western Conference Finals. A win in this series and they’ll get the winner of the Nuggets/Spurs in the next round, either of which I’d consider a winnable series.

#4 Houston Rockets -305 vs. #5 Utah Jazz +230

This might be my exception though. The Rockets finished 2nd in the NBA in Offensive Rating while the Jazz finished with the top Defensive Rating in the NBA. This should be a good one.

Last year is not this year, but these two teams met in the second round of the playoffs last year and the Rockets won rather handily. The Jazz only won one game and every other game was decided by 10 or more. I don’t think this Rockets team is as good as last year’s on the defensive end, but I still see Houston being able to exploit the Jazz defense again as James Harden is just having an amazing season. The systems remain the same and the personnel is not different enough to scare me off. A healthy Chris Paul makes the Rockets very dangerous.

I think this one could go six or seven games, but I don’t see the Rockets losing. The second round series versus the Warriors could decide the Western Conference winner.
