2017 NBA MVP Betting Odds

2017 NBA MVP Betting Odds

After two years of Steph Curry being the NBA MVP, it feels like it’s time for someone new to take the award. While you can still get a pretty good number on Steph Curry +350, it seems unlikely that he will add a third straight award while playing on a team with Kevin Durant +1000. There simply won’t be enough points to go around and his impact will simply feel lessened by the addition of another top player. Sorry, Warriors fans.

One of the most interesting propositions is the best player in the NBA, Lebron James +450. He’s spent the past couple of seasons mostly resting himself for big runs in the playoffs and has been accused of taking off large portions of the season and not giving his all. While this is possibly true, he was still one of the best players in the league while not giving it a 100%. One has to wonder if coming off an championship season if he will feel like he needs to prove himself as the best in the league one more time. He’s certainly capable of an MVP season every year that he plays, but he might prefer championship rings to MVP trophies and not “go for it”.

Everyone is going crazy on Russell Westbrook +200 this year because they think that he is simply going to go off in the absence of Kevin Durant. That is true and he should put up some big numbers this year, I’m not sure it will be enough to win himself the MVP. The thing with MVPs is that it is very often a player from one of the top four teams in the league. I can’t see the Thunder being that, no matter how many numbers Westbrook puts up.

Which is why I think this one comes down to two possible candidates, both at +1000.

James Harden +1000 should put up similar video game numbers to what everyone is expecting from Westbrook, but do it on a far better team. The Mike D’Antoni coaching hire is a stroke of genius as he will completely unlock Harden’s offensive ceiling. The points numbers could go up, the assists could go up, everything could go up. Two years ago he was the runner-up for MVP with an arguably better season than Steph Curry. If the Rockets bounce back this year he is not likely to have Curry standing in his way.

The other big name candidate is Kawhi Leonard +1000. The Spurs are the Spurs and this guy has just improved every year of his career. He’s won back-to-back defensive player of the year awards and could add a third. If he can combine that play with an improved offensive season where the Spurs are once again on top of the West, we could see him add even more hardware with the MVP trophy.
