In a somewhat surprising move, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach Tyronn Lue after his team started 0-6 in the season. This is somewhat surprising as Lue has been to the last three Eastern Conference Finals and led this team to the NBA championship in 2016. It definitely feels as if Lue was fired because LeBron James is now a Laker.
We’re barely a week into the season so thinking about this kind of thing seems stupid, but Bovada posted this prop so let’s take a look at it. Rooting for someone to lose their job is kind of gross, but this is the NBA and it’s a business. Winning is the only thing that matters to some teams and even if it’s not the coach’s fault, someone has to go. These guys still get paid on their contracts if they are fired and there are always more opportunities out there for some with NBA coaching experience. So let’s take a look at the odds.
The NBA Division odds are up and today we’ll start with the Eastern Conference. Last season, these race wasn’t very close in the Atlantic as the Raptors ran away with it. That is not expected to be the case this year as it could be the most competitive division with the 76ers, Raptors and Celtics considered three of the best teams in the East. The Heat won the Southeast last year and they’ll be challenged again this year by the Wizards. While the Cavaliers almost certainly won’t be returning as the Central champions. These divisions look to be much more interesting than last season.
Losing LeBron James is just about the biggest loss that a team can have. It happened to the Cavs before and it happened to the Miami Heat. In both of those situations the team did not make the playoffs the following season, and that is also what the betting line seems to be implying here as the Cavs 2019 Win total is just 31.5 wins.
